Whisk of Smoke: A Cocktail with Character

There are cocktails that whisper, and there are cocktails that announce themselves in a plume of intrigue. The Whisk of Smoke belongs to the latter. Born from the Copper Grouse Restaurant in Manchester, Vermont—originally called “Wisp of Smoke”—this reimagined version takes its name from the smoky mezcal and the whisky sweetness of Drambuie. The result is a drink that feels both mysterious and refined, with each sip unfolding like a story told by firelight.

A Mezcal Foundation with Depth

At the heart of the Whisk of Smoke is mezcal, specifically the revered Del Maguey Mezcal Chichicapa. Crafted in Oaxaca, this spirit carries the essence of roasted agave and toasted corn, finishing with whispers of bitter chocolate and mint. Its bold smokiness gives the cocktail its backbone, evoking campfires and rustic charm while balancing gracefully against the sweetness layered into the glass.

The Sweet Mystery of Drambuie

What sets this cocktail apart is the addition of Drambuie, a Scottish whisky liqueur infused with honey, herbs, and spices. Its warmth and complexity add a velvety texture that rounds out the sharper notes of mezcal. The honeyed sweetness doesn’t overwhelm but instead harmonizes with the blackberry syrup and lime, turning the drink into something greater than the sum of its parts.

Fruit and Citrus for Perfect Balance

Blackberry syrup lends a rich berry sweetness, its dark hue complementing the smoky undertones, while fresh lime juice cuts through with brightness and acidity. This balance is key: the cocktail never feels heavy, even when poured generously over ice. The garnish—a simple lime twist—adds a visual spark and a final fragrant note to every sip.

A Smoke-Kissed Experience in Every Glass

Served over a mountain of ice in a double rocks glass, the Whisk of Smoke is as much about presentation as it is about flavor. The swirling chill tames the intensity of mezcal while releasing slow layers of fruit, spice, and honey. With each sip, you’ll taste why this cocktail deserves a place among the best smokey cocktails, standing proudly alongside its cousin, the Perfect Crime.
